Claw back more detail in over-exposed areas by shooting and editing in Camera Raw format

•How to reveal hidden detail in Raw-format shots

When you snap a shot on your iphone, the image file is usually saved as a JPEG file that can be easily shared via social network or emailed to a friend. However, JPEG files are compressed, so they lack some information about the scene’s colours and tones. Most Digital SLR users can set their camera to shoot in an uncompressed Raw format to capture more detail. They can import the Raw format file into the Photos app’s and use selective tone tweaking tools to reveal more detail than they could with a compressed JPEG file. Raw files also contain less blocky compression artefacts than you’d find in a JPEG, so they look better. Once you’ve processed a Raw file in Photos you can export it as a JPEG to share online.
