Not so long ago doing your tax returns was a paper-based exercise, one eventually replaced with the ability to complete them online. Even this was highly time consuming and a chore that would take hours of research to complete once a year.

This has changed a lot now, however, thanks to the HMRC app, which offers all of the pertinent detail you require in order to complete your return accurately and in a timely fashion. It takes little time to learn how it works, and it can potentially save you many hours of wasted time annually.

1 The big numbers

Once you have logged into your HMRC account you will see your income and tax estimate for the year in big numbers.

2 Calculate your tax

Tap ‘Tax Calculator’ and enter your income. This offers a rough idea of the tax you will need to pay in the year ahead.

3 Your tax code

Your can also view your current tax code at any time. Having this available is a huge improvement on the old system.
