Clipping

The tones in a histogram are represented by a numerical scale. The blackest shadows should have a value of 0. The brightest highlights should have a value of 100. If your tonal adjustments cause any of the graph to overshoot these extremes then the darkest and brightest areas will feature no detail (and are said to be clipped).
