Categories and subcategor­ies

It can be difficult to understand what smart categories is doing and how to make the most of it, so here is a slightly different spreadshee­t. This one records the computer equipment in offices and who it is assigned to.

There are lots of people using imacs and Macbooks, and they are clearly Mac fans! The point is, some items appear several times, and this provides interestin­g ways to organise them. Product sales would result in a similar type of table.

1 Organise by room

Create a table containing a list of office equipment in each room. Click ‘Smart Categories’ in the toolbar and select ‘Room’ to organise the informatio­n.

2 Change the groups

In the Categories inspector select a different column. We selected ‘Equipment’ to arrange it by type. For values, click the category row under Value then Subtotal.
