As with most things, the more ex­pe­ri­enced you be­come with Garage­band, the more you ap­pre­ci­ate cer­tain tech­niques. It can take some time to fig­ure out the sub­tleties of how the ap­pli­ca­tion works, so there is a real ben­e­fit in un­der­stand­ing how key at­tributes, or ‘project prop­er­ties’, in­flu­ence the mu­sic you then cre­ate. These fun­da­men­tals have a pro­found im­pact on set­ting up over­all project struc­ture and per­for­mance, span­ning a num­ber of im­por­tant fea­tures. While they can al­ways be changed, mak­ing ad­just­ments sub­se­quently can throw an in-progress com­po­si­tion out of whack. In this guide we’ll have a re­fresher course on set­ting project tempo, key, time sig­na­ture, length and master vol­ume.
