Using the tilt shift effect

iCreate - - FINAL CUT PRO X -

When shooting a toy or model you tend to get a narrow band of focus due to the camera’s proximity to the subject and a wide aperture setting. A specialist tilt shift lens can produce a similar narrow band of focus that makes full-size subjects look like toys (especially if you shoot the subject from an elevated angle as you might a toy).

1 Import clip

Import our supplied Tiltshift Source.mov clip and place it in the timeline. We shot this from a bridge to mimic the high angle you might shoot a train set from.

2 Modify blur properties

In the Inspector, set Amount to 40 and Softness to 500. Keep Width at 100 to have a wide band of focus in the middle. Play the clip to see your ‘toy train set’ in action.
