Cedar cladding
Swap traditional render for wow-effect wood to get an eye-catching exterior
1 IT’S HARD-WEARING
The Kellys’ extension is clad in vertical western red cedar. It’s
a durable timber that is easy to work with and virtually knot free.
2 IT MAY NEED TO BE SPECIALLY TREATED…
‘We treated the cedar boards on the Kellys’ extension with flame retardant,’ explains James Shaw,
director of Whitshaw Builders. ‘This guaranteed the extension met with building regulations for the spread of fire.’
3 ...BUT THIS WILL HELP IT KEEP ITS COLOUR
While not all building regulations require western red cedar to be treated, doing so also preserves the red colouring and prevents it fading to silver-grey over time.
4 IT WILL REQUIRE SPECIAL FIXINGS
The natural oils in the timber have a corrosive effect on
ferrous metals, so galvanised or stainless-steel fixings should
be used when attaching cedar cladding to external walls.
5 YOU CAN BUY OFFTHE-PEG OR BESPOKE
The Kellys’ architects specified two different sizes of board, which were alternated to create
an unusual 3D stepped effect instead of a flat finish. A similar project would cost in the region of £6,000 to £7,000.
