Swimming pools
1 PLANNING PERMISSION ISN’T REQUIRED
Unless you live in a listed building, planning permission isn’t usually needed for an outdoor pool. The excavation should be no more than 2m
deep though, otherwise it will be deemed an engineering operation and require approval.
2 THEY NEED SPACE
Standard pools measure 10m by 5m, but you’ll also need to allow space around
them to store plant and filtration equipment.
3 YOU’LL NEED AN EXPERT
It’s important to employ professional engineers and
installers to ensure the excavation and waterproofing
elements are completed to the highest standards. Trade association SPATA (spata.co.uk) represents pool companies.
4 COSTS ARE ONGOING
The initial cost of installing a pool can start at a few hundred pounds for aboveground models, running to many thousands for in-ground versions. Heating is one of the most expensive repeat costs, so consider energy-saving options such as solar panels and heat-retaining pool liners.
5 THEY’RE NOT JUST FOR SWIMMING…
In Britain, outdoor pools are sometimes perceived as expensive, high-maintenance toys which can only be used
for a short time each year, but the water reflects light, creates
movement, and gives a cooling effect in summer.
