‘Our home feels brighter and more practical’

A gorgeous glazed extension

Having lived in their Victorian home for several years, Ellen and James had a clear vision of what they wanted to achieve. ‘The house hadn’t been refurbished for years,’ says Ellen. ‘We loved that the kitchen opened up onto the garden, but the glazing was limited so we wanted to update that to create a better view.’

FAMILY HUB With three teenagers at home, establishing a spacious, open-plan kitchen was a priority. ‘Before the build, the kitchen was on two different levels with a chimney breast in the middle, dividing the dining area and kitchen,’ says Ellen. Their architect, Richard Bridges of Alexander Owen Architecture (aoarchitecture.co.uk), recommended Create Bespoke (createbespokebeauty.co.uk) for the construction. ‘Our builder and architect worked really well together.’

INVITING LIGHT IN Richard drew up plans for a wraparound extension that would encompass a spacious kitchen-diner. ‘The glazing was an important part of the design, as we wanted it to be bright and airy,’ says Ellen.

A PERSONAL TOUCH Now the whole family enjoys spending time together in the kitchen-diner. ‘I love how sleek the house looks, and we’ve created a home with plenty of space for those personal, family touches.’
