HOW MUCH DO THEY COST?

The price can vary hugely. At the lower end, a build-your-own summerhous­e can come in at under £700, while a top-notch custom option, with power sockets and light fittings, can cost up to £60,000.

DOES IT NEED A FOUNDATION?

Without a strong, solid foundation, you risk damaging your building beyond repair once installed. If the supplier doesn’t include the foundation in the price, you’ll need to hire a builder to do the job. A flat surface of paving slabs or concrete, at least 10cm thick, is ideal. Remember to leave around 50cm clearance if you’re building near walls, fences or trees.

CAN I CONNECT TO SERVICES?

A home office is the most popular use for a garden room. Most companies work in standard unit sizes – say, to the nearest metre or half metre – but sometimes a more specific size, right down to the centimetre, is best to maximise the available space.
