Somewhere for the weekend
This Devonshire guest house makes a perfect foodie hideaway
A West Country retreat
Visiting Glebe House, it’s apparent that owners Hugo and Olive are inspired by the ‘agriturismo’ of Italy, where farms provide accommodation and an artisanal culinary offering. And, while Glebe House isn’t quite a working farm, it has a glorious 15-acre freeholding, which allows chef Hugo to create seasonal dishes.
The late-georgian vicarage was previously run as a B&B by Hugo’s parents. Now, Studio Alexandra has brought the property up to date, accentuating original features with colour and pattern. The plan was to make each room feel vibrant yet homely, as is the case with the
Tulip Room, with its beautiful views over the Coly Valley.
The Restaurant offers a £48-a-head four-course dining experience, inspired by Italian cuisine. Expect egg yolk ravioli with leeks and roasted-bone butter sauce, and Amalfi lemon tart. The Kitchen serves rustic fare: pies, ragu and casseroles. There’s also a bakery and charcuterie room, bookable for cookery classes – a true foodie retreat.
