FLEXIBLE LIGHTING

-

Many of us feel left in the dark when it comes to getting bathroom lighting right. A bit of knowledge about which fittings to choose and where to position them is all that’s required.

QWould a simple overhead ceiling light suffice? In a word, no. Layers of light from a variety of sources are the secret to making sure your bathroom is a relaxing and functional space that can easily adapt to different tasks. To achieve this, you’ll need a mix of ambient, task and accent lighting.

QWhat is ambient lighting? Ambient lights provide overall illumination. Downlights are popular, they are mounted on or recessed into the ceiling and direct light downwards. Avoid laying them in a regular grid formation as it’ll create a flat, bland effect. Instead, think about where you most need overhead lighting and focus on these areas.

QWhat is task lighting? Task lighting, as you might imagine, provides light for specific tasks. In the bathroom, these could be putting on make-up or shaving so it’s likely you’ll need task lighting around your bathroom mirror. Installing wall lights either side of the mirror works well, or you could consider a mirror with integrated lighting. Don’t position a downlight straight above your head: it’ll cast unflattering shadows across your face.

QWhat is accent lighting? The best way to add a relaxing quality to your windowless bathroom is with accent lighting, which highlights particular areas or objects for aesthetic rather than functional purposes. Highlight wall niches with downlights or easy-fit strip lights, which will provide a soft glow when you’re relaxing in the bath, while LED strip lights under a wall-mounted vanity or bath will create a floating effect.
