12 HOW TO STAIR TILE YOUR RISERS

Your staircase is probably the first thing you see when you walk in the front door, so give it an update with statement floor tiles that will make you smile, as well as impress guests.

■ If your stairs are currently carpeted, carefully pull this up, and get rid of any underlay, nails or staples. Give the treads a couple of coats of hard-wearing floor paint and leave to dry.

■ If you’re using the tiles that match the flooring in your hallway, think about whether you want to continue the pattern in the same direction for a cohesive look, or change it up for a statement.

■ Using a tile adhesive and spacers, fix your tiles in place and ensure they are completely dry before walking on them. Fill in between the tiles with grout in a complementary shade, then wipe tiles clean and leave to dry.
