Classic sliding doors consist of large glass panels mounted on a track so that one can slide behind the other. Depending on your space, you can have up to four sliding panels.

UPVC sliding doors start at around £700, making them a good-value option. They’re lightweight but their wide frames can look intrusive. Aluminium frames are the main alternative and they create a more contemporary effect. They are very rigid and can therefore be slimmer, allowing for more glass, which in turn gives you more light and bigger views. Standard aluminium doors start around £1,700. Bespoke doors in either material will cost extra.

They can be double or triple glazed, and some also incorporate insulation, minimising further heat loss. Laminated or safety glass boosts security, as do multi-lever locks.
