PLANNING PERMISSION
Some, but not all, garage conversions need the planning green light from your local council. Here’s what you need to know:
LOCAL CHECKS Permission isn’t usually required for a garage conversion, provided the work is internal and doesn’t involve enlarging the building. However, you must seek advice from your local authority’s planning department first.
LISTED PROPERTY Garages that are listed or in conservation areas will be less straightforward. In all cases, your conversion must comply with Building Regulations, so speak to your council’s building control department. EXTERIOR CHANGES Planning permission will be required by some councils if you’ll be substantially altering the exterior of your house. Check with the Planning Portal (gov.uk/ planning-permissionengland-wales).
