“Spend time considering the best position for the bath as it can be quite dominating in a small space and obstruct fittings” the other bathroom

The right layout can make or break a bathroom. Draw up a scale plan or use an online planner, and don’t forget to ask your plumber or bathroom company to check your design is suitable for the space.

Q Can I move the loo? It’s cheaper and easier to keep the loo close to the soil stack (a vertical pipe that takes waste from the loo to the main drain). It is possible to divert pipework, but keep the run short to avoid blockages.

Q Where can the bath go? Give the tub prime position, centrally (if there’s room) or in front of a window. If you can’t fit in a freestanding bath, a back-towall style saves space but still looks luxurious. Check that the flooring will take the weight if you’re fitting a cast-iron design.

Q What should I know about moving the shower? A new drain and plumbing supply will have to be carefully planned and connected. The direction the floor joists run will determine how easy it is to fit a low-level shower tray and divert pipework. The thickness of the walls and whether they are brick, block or studwork affects the type of shower valve that can be used.

Q Could a wet room work? Expert drainage and tanking (waterproofing) is a must to make it leakproof. Different methods of installation depend on whether your floor is concrete or wood. Consider fitting a glass screen to prevent the loo or basin getting splashed.

Q Essential planning tips? Allow space around fixtures for drying off and ensure there is enough elbow room at the basin sides, too. Some simple space-making solutions for small bathrooms include rehanging a door to open the other way or fitting a pocket door, which slides to open.
