Timeless, elegant and practical, shutters are a stylish and functional option for bathroom windows

-

If you’re after more than a quick-fix window dressing solution, classic window shutters are durable and offer privacy, security and style.

Q

Are shutters practical in a bathroom?

Unlike fabric blinds, which can get damp in steamy bathrooms, shutters allow extra ventilation with their louvred slats, so they’ll dry quicker. They’re also easier to wipe down and keep clean.

Q Won’t moisture in the air damage the shutters?

While painted wood or MDF shutters will be all right in well-ventilated bathrooms, in high humidity, moistureresistant shutters are more practical. Made of ABS plastic, polymer or polyvinyl, they look like regular wooden shutters but are waterproof, so slats won’t rot or warp, and shutters will keep their shape and work smoothly.

Q What about privacy and light levels?

One of the benefits of shutters is that their easy-to-adjust slats

allow greater control than with a regular blind. By tilting the slats up or down, you can vary how much light comes in and obscure the view from outside.

Q What are the different styles on offer?

Full-height shutters cover the whole window and open as one unit, although the slats operate independently. Tier-ontier shutters look similar, but the top and bottom work separately. Cafe-style shutters cover just the lower portion of the window, which maximises daylight, and are a more affordable option.

Q Aren’t shutters expensive?

Professionally installed shutters can be pricey - cut costs with DIY shutters you can fit yourself.

“For upstairs windows, shutter slats should be angled downwards so people looking up can’t see in. For downstairs upwards” shutters, slant them
