‘Individual mistakes costly’ – Reilly

Mountjoy Utd 2 Derrychara Utd 0

MOUNTJOY United won the battle of the newly promoted teams, as last season’s Division Two champions defeated Derrychara United 2-0.

The result gives Mountjoy their first points of the campaign, with Derrychara still searching for a victory in the top flight.

Derrychara Manager Andy Reilly felt his team created enough chances to win the game, but were punished for their mistakes.

“We were very disappointed not to take anything from the game,” he admitted.

“I felt we controlled it for large periods, but individual mistakes proved too costly again. We can see already that playing good football just isn’t enough in this league, and we’ve got to find that killer instinct in the final third.

“In saying that, we didn’t expect much from our first five games, and it was all about finding our feet. It won’t get any easier this week with Kesh hitting plenty in their last game.”

Derrychara came close to opening the scoring with six minutes on the clock when Chris Beacom headed Paddy Beresford’s corner narrowly wide of the post.

Their bright start continued, and Alex Brownlee whipped a cross into the box for Lee Glass, but Mountjoy keeper Gareth

Barbour gathered his goalbound effort.

Aside from one early save from Josh Brownlee, it was Derrychara carving the goal-scoring opportunities and Jamie Mcfarlane had a shot touched over the crossbar by the goalkeeper, before Beresford’s long-range effort flew just off target.

The chances continued to come for Derrychara at the start of the second half, with Barbour pulling off a great reflex save from Mcfarlane in the opening minute of the half.

However, after 55 minutes, the away team were made to pay for their wastefulness in front of goal, as Mountjoy took the lead through Jack Swan.

Seven minutes later William Donaghy added a second, and the game slid further out of Derrychara’s grasp when Stuart Cochrane was dismissed for a second bookable offence.

With a man advantage, Mountjoy were able to control the closing stages of the game and hold on for their first win since their return to Division One.
