Irvinestown hold off Belcoo to progress to final

Irvinestown 1-14 Belcoo 2-06

-

DESPITE a strong opening to the second half, Irvinestown were able to hold off the challenge of Belcoo and book their place in the final of the Reserve B Championship.

Leading by five points at half time, Irvinestown were clawed back by Belcoo.

But a Pearse Mulrone goal in the final quarter was enough to see them through with five points to spare.

The win sets up a decider with Devenish on Saturday evening in Brewster Park.

In the first half Corey Slevin, Eamon Mccarney, Chris Lyons and Mulrone were all on the scoreboard for the winners as they dominated proceedings.

It was a tough opening half for Belcoo who could only muster two points in the opening 30 minutes with Aaron Dolan on target as it ended 0-07 to 0-02 at the break.

The start of the second half saw Belcoo fight their way back into contention with a flurry of scores.

Kieran Leonard was introduced as a sub at half-time and he made an early impact, finding the back of the net.

Belcoo would get a second goal from Ciaran Flanagan while points were scored by Emmet Scollan, Oisin O’loughlin, Niall Cullen and Shane Doherty.

For Irvinestown, Slevin and Lyons were again on target while Mulrone’s goal gave the Irvinestown men the cushion they needed to secure their place in the final.
