Good Relations Week events challenge sectarianism and racism

FERMANAGH and Omagh District Council organised a range of free public events across the Fermanagh and Omagh district as part of the Northern Ireland-wide Good Relations Week 2022.

Events included a free guided tour of Belfast City Cemetery by former Belfast Mayor and author, Tom Hartley. Approximately 40 people, including representatives of Fermanagh and Omagh Interfaith group enjoyed the fascinating tour which challenged stereotypes and highlighted how political and cultural identity of 19th century Belfast was complex and layered.

During the week the theatre piece, ‘Green and Blue’, took place in the Ardhowen Theatre and it was met with great applause.

The award-winning dramatic play explored the painful and humorous reality faced by the individuals who patrolled the border during the height of the conflict. The performance was followed by a facilitated discussion where many sensitive issues were dealt with in a safe and respectful environment.

On Wednesday, September 21, a free history conference entitled ‘Ireland in 1922: from Conflict and Civil War to Partition’ took place in Omagh Library. The conference explored the key historical events of 1922 with guest speakers Dr Russell Rees, Jim Mcdermott and Dr Frank Costello. Approximately 100 people attended the conference including pupils from Sacred Heart College (Omagh), Omagh High School and Devenish College, Enniskillen.

Also on the Wednesday, an online talk by author Denise Kleinrichert on her book ‘Republican Internment and the ship Argenta 1922’ took place in the evening, followed by a facilitated Q&A session. The talk had a focus on the historical connections to the Fermanagh and Omagh District.

On Thursday, September 22, in conjunction with Fermanagh Churches’ Forum, an international conference ‘The Future of Democracy’ was held with guest speaker Dr. Johnston Mcmaster, Irish School of Ecumenics. This was another successful event with students attending a number of Enniskillen Schools including Mount Lourdes Grammar, St. Michael’s College, Enniskillen Royal Grammar, St. Joseph’s College and St. Fanchea’s College.

Good Relations Week is a high-profile initiative aimed at celebrating all aspects of our culture and heritage, challenging sectarianism and racism and promoting understanding and respect among all sections of our community.
