Political representatives and victims’ group welcome bomb memorial’s installation
THE installation of the Enniskillen Bomb Memorial at the site of the 1987 explosion has been welcomed by political representatives and other interested parties.
The memorial was installed last week. It was unveiled back in 2017 to mark 30 years since the IRA bomb ended the lives of 12 people and injured many others.
Ulster Unionist representatives Tom Elliott MLA and Councillor Roy Crawford welcomed the erection of the memorial.
Mr. Elliott said: “I’m glad that the memorial has finally been erected. It will stand as lasting tribute to those who lost their lives nearly 35 years ago.
“I trust many will welcome this news, but especially the loved ones of the 12 people who are no longer with us.
“I pay great tribute to those who have persevered with the erection of the memorial.”
Councillor Crawford said: “This is a momentous day and I’m happy that the Enniskillen Poppy Memorial has a new, permanent home.
“I hope the victims’ families find peace with this new permanent fixture.”

Tyrone MLA, Dame Arlene Foster, reacted to the siting of the memorial in a tweet, writing: “Well done to the victims who achieved this.
“It should not have taken so long and there were many hurdles to cross, but with quiet dignity you persisted. Proud to know you.”
Welcoming the memorial’s installation, DUP MLA Deborah Erskine said: “I want to pay tribute to the families who lost loved ones and those who were injured in the Enniskillen Bomb.
“It is their tenacity and steadfastness which has insured that this memorial has its rightful place in Enniskillen.
“I am glad that they now have a permanent memorial to remember their loved ones.
“I will be joining the families on the anniversary to remember, and I thank the families for the work that they have done to secure this lasting memorial for the generations to come.”
Kenny Donaldson, Director of Services, South East Fermanagh Foundation, said: “We are delighted that the memorial has finally been positioned at the site.
“SEFF are privileged to support many of the Enniskillen Poppy Day Bomb bereaved families and also injured survivors and first responders, and we would wish to place on record our respect and acknowledgement for their tenacity and the dignified way in which they have conducted themselves throughout the years.”
Mr. Donaldson added: “The Enniskillen Memorial Remembrance Group, comprising the bereaved families, have requested a Service of Remembrance and Thanksgiving marking the 35th anniversary, and this will take place in Enniskillen Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, November 8 at 7.30pm.
“The families are keen to have attendance from people from across the community.”
