High-quality young animals at a busy sale

SUCKLER farmers have responded to the recent suckled calf sales with some high-quality young animals.

At the Ulster Farmers’ Mart in Enniskille­n, the Northern Ireland Charolais Club’s sponsored show and sale took place on a Tuesday evening recently.

Judge, James Leonard had a difficult task to select winners in both the male and female sections. At the end of the judging process, the following winners were selected.

Male Calf Champion

– Irvine Kerrigan, Rossharbou­r, Kesh.

Reserve Male Calf Champion

– Gordon Elliott, Derrygonne­lly.

Female Champion

Cathal Thompson.

Reserve Female Champion

– David Boles junior.

The Northern Ireland Charolais Club was represente­d by local pedigree breeder, David Bothwell of St. Angelo.

Prices for suckled calves have been generally good throughout the autumn months with the top-quality Continenta­l bred calves fetching premium prices.

At the most recent sale of weanlings on Thursday last, a 350kgs Charolais cross bull calf was sold for £1,070, and a 371kgs Charolais cross bull also for £1,070.
