Wins for The Teacakes and The Muffins in Autumn League

-

WEEK three, and almost halfway through this year’s Mallard Home Bakes sponsored Autumn League at Itvinestown Lawn Tennis Club, with everything still to play for.

On Monday, the league leaders, The Pastries, took on the then current bottom team, The Teacakes.

Michael Duffy and Mark Crozier got the latter off to a flying start with a 10-3 victory before Karen Johnston and Laura Conway narrowed the total points deficit with a gutsy 8-5 win.

In round two, Michael – now partnering Debbie Brown – replied with the same 8-5 scoreline, followed by a single-point victory (7-6) by Mark Crozier and Mark Palmer to ensure The Teacakes came out on top with a 30-22 points distribution.

The other Monday night match-up pitted The Brownies against The Cookies, with each side ending up with 26 points at the end of the evening.

Kathleen Maguire (sub) partnered Jonathan Irvine to a 9-4 first round win for the Brownies – a score matched for the Cookies by Marty Garrity/christelle Andrich in round two.

Marty and his first round partner Tumai Lucas had taken their match 7-6 and Andrew Surphlis with Jonathan repeated that score for their team in round two.

Tuesday night’s match between The Doughnuts and The Muffins was a more one-sided affair, with big first round wins for the former from Steven Phair/trevor Lucy (11-2) and 9-4 from Tracey Hall/ Gayle Graham.

The Muffins took their only win on the night when Pete Keogh and subbbing partner David Lowe edged a 7-6 scoreline, while Trevor and Gayle added 9-4 to the convincing 35-17 victory for the Doughnuts.

Play continues every Monday and Tuesday until the finals on Monday, November 21.

The league presentation will be at a Christmas Party night in Mahon’s Hotel on Saturday, December 3.
