Beware of Housing Executive scam in run up to Christmas

-

Dear Sir,

I am a Housing Executive tenant. Yesterday evening, I received an alarming call from someone purporting to be my `Housing Manager’. He went on to enquire had I any damp or dry rot issues in my home at the moment?

It sounded as though he was reading from a pre-set script.

I did not give this person any personal information.

I put the phone down on him. He did not attempt to call back.

Upon checking, I discovered the call had been made from a London number. I had a feeling that there was something not right with this call right from the outset.

With the cost of living crisis worsening, food and fuel poverty and, again approaching Christmas there are nefarious people who will attempt to steal your identity so that they may use it for themselves; to gain entry into your premises under false pretences or burgle it. This is a possible scam.

I have phoned this incident into the police on their non-emergency number 101 this morning and shall also be reporting it to Action Fraud, telephone number 0300 123 2040.

I strongly urge anyone who may have received a similar call to report this to both the police and to Action Fraud.

A final note, for anyone who may have given private and personal information to a similar caller, now is not the time to feel ashamed or embarrassed.

Acting now could save you much more financial heartbreak in the future or prevent you from being burgled.

No one but you, the police and Action Fraud are going to know what has happened.

I cannot urge you in strong enough terms to report it to the relevant authorities.

Yours faithfully,

Concerned
