Doughnuts and Pastries are in pole position in league

-

WITH only two more weeks left in this year’s Mallard Home Bakes sponsored Autumn League at Irvinestown Lawn Tennis Club, all bodes well for an exciting run-in leading to the final play-off stages.

On Monday, October 24, The Cookies took on The Pastries and made a clean sweep, taking all four matches.

First round wins came from Marty Garrity/tumai Lucas (8-5) followed by a 9-4 win from Christelle Andrich/ Laura Mcdowell.

Marty and Christelle continued to add to the score with a 8-5 second round win while Tumai and Laura edged their match 7-6 to end the night with a resounding final score of 32 -20.

A similar story was unfolding on courts three and four as The Brownies finished with the same total in their match against The Eclairs.

David Lowe and sub Kathleen Maguire got the Eclairs off to a promising start with a 9-4 win, but that was quickly overturned when the young partnership of Edeline Andrich/jonathan Irvine stormed through to an 11-2 win.

A second round 10-3 win for Jonathan, this time with partner Andrew Surphlis, and a 7-6 score from David Mcdowell and Edeline, settled the matter for The Brownies.

Tuesday night’s match between The Doughnuts and The Teacakes was a much closer affair with both teams taking one match in each round.

Steven Phair and subbing partner David Lowe secured a tightly-matched 7-6 score for The Doughnuts, while a convincing 10-3 win for Kathleen Maguire (sub) and Mark Palmer got The Teacakes on the scoreboard.

In the second round, Kathleen partnered Michael Duffy to an 8-5 win while David Lowe and Gayle Graham matched that score to end the night 29-23 in favour of The Teacakes.

The Monday night matches were re-scheduled to Wednesday as a number of players were unavailable because of Hallowe’en but torrential rain on the evening resulted in play being cancelled, and the four teams agreed to split the points evenly.

On Tuesday night, The

Cookies fielded three subs in their match against The Doughnuts and came away with a 28-24 win.

Both first round matches went the way of The Doughnuts with a 7-6 win for Steven Phair/trevor Lucy and a great 9-4 score from sisters partnership Tracey Hall/gayle Graham.

The Cookies took both second round matches with an 8-5 win for the subbing partnership of John Maguire/kathleen Maguire and David Lowe (sub) partnered team Captain Laura Mcdowell to a 10-3 victory to clinch the win.

Play continues every Monday and Tuesday until the finals on Monday, November 21.

The league presentation will be at a Christmas party night in Mahon’s Hotel on Saturday, December 3.
