Prizegiving ends season
THE golf season was officially concluded on Saturday evening with the annual prizegiving. The prize winners supported the occasion well with only one apology for non attendance.
The proceedings were held up by a very dramatic sporting event in Brewster Park where our match secretary and some of the prize winners were unavoidably detained.
However, when things did kick off, the prizegiving – conducted by Captains Paul and Helena, and supported by match secretaries Dermott and Patricia – went very smoothly.
It was a really enjoyable and social evening with live music provided by Maria Cameron and Ryan Mcdonough. We held a draw and there were multiple prizes.
Our Lady Captain Helena reminded us that it is a members’ club and that the proceeds of the draw on the night were going towards club funds.
The gents’ prizes were distributed across the board with the following winners.
Ballinamallard Cup – Stephen Gault; Bob Doherty Cup – Walter Mcfarland; Scratch Cup – Dermott Love; Pringle Cup – Niall Gormley; Horace Fleming Cup – Darren Byrne and the Club Singles Matchplay – Stephen Smyth.
The Fletcher 4 Ball winners nearly missed the photo shoot, following a rather speedy exit from Brewster Park. They were Dara Mcmanus and
Ronan Beattie.
The Saint Patrick’s Day cup between the ladies and gents was won overall this year by Paul Mcdonough.
The Tom Sheridan Memorial – again between the ladies and gents – was won by Tanya Cathcart. The Bob Chambers Memorial Trophy (ladies and gents matchplay) was won by Jill Hamilton. The Killyhevlin Cup winner was Teddy Mckinley.
In the Ladies section, several of our ladies had really good performances over the year, appearing more than once in the prize winner arena.
Hazel Hogg was the winner of both the Anna Hare and Primrose Mavitty Cups. Deirdre Mcsorley also featured strongly and won two of our matchplay competitions, the Enniskillen RUGBY Perpetual Cup and the Hospice Trophy.
Patricia Durnien had a good year too, winning the Blake Perpetual Challenge (V PAR) and the Guinness Perpetual Trophy (Matchplay). She also won the Golf Ireland Silver Medal for best stroke play in her division.
Consistent
Deirdre Slater won the Golf Ireland Bronze Medal for her consistent performances in stroke play competitions over the year in her division.
The ladies’ winner of the Lakeland Open Trophy 2022 was Marina Brownlee, while the Ladies Past Captain’s cup went to Rita Mckechnie. The Freda Johnston salver was won by Lady Captain Helena Tisdall.
Helena did not stop there and after recovering from injury put in a sterling performance with Damien Love to clinch the much coveted club matchplay competition, the EM Archdale Cup.
Benny Hunter was the winner of another (ladies v gents) coveted prize , The Mercer Watch.
The Ladies Golfer Of the Year (GOY) winning the Smithwick’s Ale Perpetual Trophy, and also the Centenary Cup, was Sandra Mcelroy.
Sandra has had the bit between her teeth all year and characteristically was always there in the arena to finally clinch this title.
A similar performance in the men’s sector was from Keith Cairns, who continuously strived to improve his handicap and was rewarded by getting the men’s GOY. Well done to Sandra and Keith.

Although our members fought battles in many competitions and on many courses, club silverware was hard to come by this year, with only one team managing to bring home the cup.
Congratulations to Garry Baxter and his team on winning the Phair Cup in the Tyrone and Fermanagh series.
Due to the recent exceptional heavy rainfall over the past five to six weeks, the front nine – especially the first and ninth – has become unplayable.
With no expected let up in the forecast, the decision was made to close the front nine earlier this week from Monday, November 14 until further notice as. A constant review will be made re this decision and it will be open again as soon as possible.
The gate on the laneway will be kept open during this time in order that buggies can proceed from the 10th tee to the 10th fairway. The respective match and handicap secretaries will be in touch in due course with details of the new formats for the winter leagues.
Invite
Lady Captain Helena is having a ‘Tropic skincare’ evening at the club this Friday, November 18 at 7.30pm and extends the invite to all members, their families and friends and is looking forward to seeing some new faces .
There will be a wonderful array of Christmas gift ideas and pamper sets which the representative, Anne, will tell us about on the night. Come along and enjoy the evening out, with no pressure to buy.
The club draw took place on Wednesday night. The winners are as follows: 1st, £125, Paddy Clarke; 2nd, £75, Chris Maguire; 3rd, £50, Ian Thompson; and 4th, £25, Colin Greaves.
The next draw will take place in the first week in December, subject to change. Draw proceeds as usual will be going toward course development.
