Winter League is closely fought

Winter League

WELL, we’re four weeks in and no one has a hint of a clue as to who’s going to win this. It’s carnage, with weekly winners following up the next week with half scores and nearly all the teams back within eight points of each other.

The last two rounds’ single winners were Noel Melanaphy with 39pts; Joe Keaney (k), 38pts; and Ronan Mcallister, 36pts; and this week, Enda Gilrane, 38pts; Shauna Fee, 37pts; and Aiden Wynne on 36pts. Massive scores are still coming in with players taking advantage of the very mild weather and great course conditions.

The hard work going on throughout the year on the course is plain for all to see, with perhaps only one wet spot where you shouldn’t be anyway.

After next week’s round, I will attempt to give an indication of the teams in with winning chances, which to all intents and purposes looks like all 15 of them, but here’s hoping there may be a gap developing.

Clubnet App

COULD I just try and enforce the use of the Clubnet app booking system for the players? It serves a number of purposes, but chiefly it shows players where there may be 2 balls or 3 balls they can join in.

There are lots of players – myself included – who can only play during the week, and this gives us an idea of when we can get out.

Secondly, it avoids clogging up the course on busier days if groups are timed out properly, which makes it a more enjoyable experience for everyone.

On a separate, unrelated note, as we are at pains to point out – please replace divots and fix pitch marks. We are the guardians of our course. Not the greenkeepers, not the players behind you, or in front of you – it’s you. Take responsibility for your golf course!

Competitions

AIDEN has asked that the following few issues be cleared up as quickly as possible. There is a small number of competitors in the winter league who have not paid the entry fee. Could they please pay before end of week four?

Could people playing in the winter competitions please continue to book tee times? Knowing the number of people playing each day helps both Aiden and Dolores in coordinating card marking and hospitality on the various days.

Could golfers please check their epurses? Several people are in deficit. Money can be put into your epurse through the Clubnet app, or by putting cash into an envelope marked with your name and epurse intention.

AGM

HOPEFULLY, you’ve all seen the notice on Clubnet regarding this year’s AGM, taking place on Sunday, November 27 at 4pm in the clubhouse. Nomination papers can be found in the caddyshack, and need to be posted in the the caddyshack entry box no later than Thursday, November 24.

This is the responsibility of all members, and is your chance to have your say on ongoing plans or actions perhaps that need to be considered.

Down through the years, the club has been very fortunate to have had determined, forward-thinking committees who have done trojan work to keep our beautiful club in pristine conditions, and are always looking to improve the experience for all who play there.

Best wishes to those who are taking up posts this incoming year, and much thanks to those who are having a rest next year. More on that in the coming weeks.

Fundraising Draw

WE ARE running a very special draw at the moment with a truly unique prize. Up for grabs is a 35 tractor; while not an expert on these vehicles, I have driven one many moons ago, and it was a bumpy and rather unpleasant experience, but maybe that’s the point?

This is a throwback to simpler times, and is a real collector’s item. It is a Massey Ferguson 3 cylinder 35. And for the measly sum of €10, it can be yours to relive the bumpy memories, or create new ones! There is also a €4,000 equivalent for those not interested in such an unique item, so all interests are covered.

Tickets are available via our webpage, Blackliongolfclub.com, or from any club member.

Why not let vintage fans or farmers whom may be interested in this unique prize know the details? You could make someone’s day alot better.
