Mistakes prove costly for Derrychara

Mountfield 3 Derrychara Utd 1

-

In a match between two sides who were yet to record their first league win of the season, it was Mountfield who emerged victorious, coming from a goal behind to consign Derrychara to their tenth consecutive league defeat.

The Enniskillen side had taken the lead through Lee Glass’ opener, but Mountfield levelled just before half time and then scored twice in the final quarter of the contest to claim a valuable three points.

“It was a game of mistakes. We got our goal from their mistake, and we made three mistakes for their three goals,” admitted Derrychara manager Damien Elliott.

“For the first 60 minutes we were looking like we could get something out of the game.

“They were big and physical and getting stuck in, but it was nothing we couldn’t handle.

“We got the early goal and created a few half chances, but they got a goal before half time.

“The ball was in the air a lot. There was a lot of head tennis and not much football being played, but we died off in the last 20 minutes and they got their two goals.

“We battled well against a physical side, and although some of the younger players died out towards the end, it is something we can work on,” he added.

Mountfield started the day on one point, just above bottom placed Killen in the table of the Division One table, and it looked as though it was going to be another tough day as Derrychara took the lead midway through the first half.

Jamie Lee Fawcett was quick to pounce on a short back pass from the home defence, and he squared the ball to Glass who had the straightforward task of tapping into the unguarded net.

The lead lasted for 20 minutes before a heavy touch in the Derrychara defence presented an opportunity to Mark Carson, and he made no mistake to draw his team level.

Craig Johnston’s free kicks looked like Derrychara’s most likely way back into the match, with one effort flying just over the crossbar and one saved by the goalkeeper.

The two newly promoted sides have both struggled to adapt to the top division, but it was Mountfield that celebrated their first top flight success when Carson added his second of the game midway through the second half.

Dara Casey rounded off the victory with a late winner to seal the points.
