Ballot results sees electoral success for Nationalists as expected

THE Nationals and Sinn Fein candidates for the joint constituency of Tyrone and Fermanagh have, as expected, been successful, and though their paper majority was considerably reduced, the figures show that the instructions given by the priests in the chapel on Sunday 12th inst., were obeyed.

The result was declared at Omagh shortly before 5pm, on Friday, as follows:

T.J.S Harbison (N) 45,236; Cahir Healy (S.F) 44,817; J.A. Pringle, K.C. (U) 38,640; W.E.D. Allen (U) 38,589.

Nat. maj over first Unionist 6,596.

S.F. maj. over second Unionist 6,228.

Messrs. Harbison and Healy were declared duly elected.

There are 98,801 persons on the registers in the two counties.

Of these 84,072 voted, so that roughly 85 per cent of the electorate exercised the franchise.

The count took place at Omagh Courthouse and occupied two days. 59,117 votes were registered in Tyrone and 24,962 in Fermanagh.

Some 51 of the papers deposited in the ballot boxes were found to be without the presiding officer’s stamp, 34 being recorded for the Nationalist and Sinn Feiner and 17 for the Unionists.

In cases where the papers were marked 1-2, instead of with two crosses, it was agreed that they should be allowed to count, the intention of the voter being clearly indicated.

There were 123 spoiled votes. Mr. Cahir Healy, the successful Sinn Fein candidate, was not present. He is an internee on board the prison ship Argenta at Larne.

It is understood that Mr. Harbison, who was a member of the old Nationalist party, will take his seat at Westminster in due course.
