TUMMERY Athletic grabbed a 94th-minute equaliser in normal time before going on to record a 4-1 win after extra-time to advance into the next round of the Mulhern Cup on Saturday. An own goal from David Bogle in the dying seconds saw the teams draw level after Jamie Sproule’s early opener for Killen.

An extra-time brace from Colm Garrity and another goal from Martin Hughes saw Ryan Hanna’s team dump Killen out of this year’s competition after leading for the majority of the contest.

“Delighted with the win,” player/ manager Hanna said.

“Notoriously difficult place for us to go.

“Killen made it extremely difficult for us after they took the lead.

“Defended deep and looked to catch us on the counter.

“Credit to the lads, we kept pushing and probing and got the luck for our persistence.”

The home side made the perfect start to proceedings on Saturday afternoon at Killen Village with Sproule edging his side in front with 14 minutes played.

A Tummery corner was cleared, and Sproule eventually found himself racing through on goal before poking home past goalkeeper Niall Mccrory.

The sides played out a fairly even game with decent chances at both ends but, as Rangers looked to be heading through, deep into added time, a long throw was sliced by a Killen player with Garrity and Killen goalkeeper Alan Buchannan going for the loose ball. It eventually dropped to Bogle whose attempted clearance hit the roof of the net to break Rangers’ hearts and force the game into extra-time.

It didn’t take long for Tummery to grab the lead as Garrity found the top corner from 25 yards and their third came shortly after as Martin Hughes’s overhead kick sailed into the net for 3-1.

The final blow came moments later as an Athletic corner travelled all the way to the far post for the awaiting Garrity to tap home and wrap up the win.
