O’brien pleased with ‘solid performance’ in league opener

Devenish 1-14 Derrylin 0-09

Devenish got their competitive season off to a convincing start as they ran out comfortable eight point winners at home to Derrylin last Saturday evening.

It was a performance that pleased their manager, Marty O’brien, especially in the first half as they kept the O’connells to only two points.

“Yeah a good win and a solid performance from the lads,” O’brien said.

“I thought our work rate and some of our score taking particularly first half was excellent.

We defended well for the most part so we’re happy with that and happy to get off with a win.”

And O’brien is hoping that his side can continue to bring these levels into Friday’s encounter against Enniskillen Gaels: “Plenty of positives and plenty to work on this week before Enniskillen who will be a tough test for us.”

The winners opened up a nine point lead by the end of the first half.

Cian O’brien, Terry O’flanagan and Jamie Flanangan all on target for points while Flanagan would also find the back of the net for Devenish.

Derrylin attempted to work a short kick out but Devenish were able to turn the ball over and two kick passes later Flanagan was in on goal and he made no mistake as the half ended 1-08 to 0-02.

The second half was more of an even affair with Derrylin outscoring Devenish by seven points to six.

Jake Smith was to the fore for Derrylin throughout the game while O’brien and Flanagan continued their form from the first half into the second half as the Garrison club eased to an opening day win of the Club Players’ Competition.

While Devenish welcome Enniskillen to Garrison on Friday evening, Derrylin have a home tie against neighbours Kinawley who did not play in the opening round of fixtures.
