ACasting a waggler just off far-bank features alongside loosefed maggots, casters and hemp can coax chub from cover. If your peg has few features, find an even-paced swim of uniform depth to run the float through. Swims less than 4ft deep need a very buoyant float known as a Specimen Waggler. It will ride uneven currents with ease. For a standard deeper swim, fish a 3AAA-4SSG straight peacock waggler. In a shallow swim, two or three No.6 or No.8 shot evenly spread will do the job. If the peg is deeper, push these together to make a small bulk to get the bait down quickly. Go with a tough 4lb mainline to a 3lb hooklink and you’ll land pretty much any size of chub. Finish off with a classic Kamasan B520 hook, size 18 or 16. Spend a fair bit of time running the rig down the swim and making minute adjustments until the hookbait is just trundling along the bottom, away from snags. You need to be able to see the float at range, so don’t add too much shot to dot it too far down. Ideally, leave all of the orange tip on show. Loosefeed either by hand or with a catapult, putting in a dozen or so maggots or grains of hemp with a few casters mixed in. Don’t break the feeding cycle – keep the bait going in because chub will soon home in on a constant stream of bait drifting through the swim and position themselves to pick off the passing goodies.
