JOANNA LUMLEY, VOICE OF EUROVISION

- Euan O’Byrne Mulligan

Douze points, darling?

Have you heard the news, darling? Absolutely Fabulous actress Dame Joanna Lumley will be announcing the UK jury’s Eurovision Song Contest results tonight.

The 78-year-old will reveal how many points the UK jury gave other contestants – from zero to the maximum “douze” (12) – during the grand finale in Malmö, Sweden. Each participating country’s jury score is combined with public votes to determine the winner.

Dame Joanna said: “I am delighted to be announcing the jury vote for the UK at this year’s Eurovision. It’s such a fabulous honour to give the iconic ‘douze points’.”

Will Patsy make an appearance?

The actress follows in the footsteps of comedian Catherine Tate, Britain’s Got Talent star Amanda Holden, comedian Mel Giedroyc and author Richard Osman.

Dame Joanna’s role was revealed during Graham Norton’s appearance on BBC’s The One Show – the Irishman will be back on commentary duties for a 14th Eurovision running.

Norton joked that she could deliver the result as Patsy, her Ab Fab character. “Glassful of champagne, fistful of cigarettes,” he said.

Dizzy with nerves...

UK entrant Olly Alexander, the lead singer of Years & Years and now a solo artist, is hoping to impress with his dance-influenced track “Dizzy”. He made it to the final automatically because the UK is one of the “big five” financial contributors to the organiser, the European Broadcasting Union.

Ahead of the big night, he admitted to feeling the pressure. “I go to bed thinking of Eurovision, dream of Eurovision, wake up thinking of Eurovision,” he said.

“As long as I do a performance I’m proud of and do my best, that’s all that matters,” he added.
