Rebecca struggles to cope

AS THE TRUTH ABOUT HER UNBORN CHILD COMES OUT, THE EMMERDALE MUM-TO-BE IS COPPING TOO MUCH FLACK, ARGUES EMILY HEAD…

- Kate White

Who’d want to be in Rebecca White’s Louboutin shoes right now? She’s pregnant, alone and about to face a backlash of epic proportions once the Emmerdale locals find out that the father of her baby is Robert Sugden.

As usual, Robert has got nasty in the face of the consequences of his cheating antics, and has demanded that Rebecca has a termination. But as he uncharacteristically confesses his sins to stunned Aaron this week (see p8), there’s plenty of drama to follow – and it’s heading Rebecca’s way…

“Unfortunately, Aaron is a casualty of Rebecca’s love for Robert,” explains Emily Head, who plays the troubled girl. “There’s no malice from her towards Aaron, and she took a step back from pursuing Robert when she realised how in love they are with each other. Rebecca really likes Aaron, and I think they’d be good friends if the circumstances were different. Unfortunately, Robert gets in the way of that ever happening!”

So, no matter how badly Robert treats her, is Rebecca still in love with him?

“I think all Rebecca wants is to love and to feel loved,” muses Emily. “Growing up in the White family was difficult, to say the least. Rebecca’s dad kicked her out many times, and her sister left her for dead once! So I think she just wants to feel loved, and when she first met Robert, she genuinely thought she saw a possibility of that happening with him. Obviously not!

“I think the problem is that Rebecca never got closure,” continues the star. “When you’ve been in love with someone but not had a proper break-up, you’re left with an attachment. And remember that Robert remains very charming – and always knows the right things to say.”

It’s a messy sitution, and now there’s a baby to consider! Although she’s kept promising to have a termination, Rebecca hasn’t gone through with it. We’ve heard her passionate tirade to Robert about what happened when she went down this path before, so where is Rebecca’s head at now?

“She’s very confused,” reveals Emily. “Rebecca is in a fragile place, and she doesn’t have many people to talk to about it. Victoria is the only person, but she thinks the baby belongs to Ross! So Rebecca is struggling. It’s incredibly daunting for her to consider being a single mum, but she has always wanted to be a mother deep down.”

Speaking of her on-off lover Ross

Barton, Rebecca discovers that he’s been blackmailing Robert over the baby secret this week. Does she step in to stop him profiting from her misfortune?

“Yes, she’s annoyed and rolling her eyes about it when she hears,” says Emily. “She does feel bad for Ross, though. They weren’t ‘exclusive’ when she slept with Robert, but they were close, and she had feelings for him. Ross doesn’t take hurt very well, and he lashes out. Still, Rebecca doesn’t want to complicate things any further.”

Who can blame Rebecca? Things are about as complicated as they can get – and it’s just the beginning of it. She’s got a lot to think about, and when she finds out that Aaron knows, there will be even more to cope with. Will she take Robert’s opinion into account as she tries to decide whether to have his baby or not?

“No, she’s not asking Robert what he wants to do any more!” insists Emily. “Whatever decision she makes, it’ll be hers alone. She doesn’t want to force anything on him, but Robert has been vile to both her and Aaron. I don’t think she wants him in her life at all right now.”
