Courtney has been talking about her Granny for so long. Are you happy that she has finally arrived in Hollyoaks?
I am! I love working with new people, so I was really excited to meet Jenny [Lee], who plays Granny Campbell. I was also very keen to see where the story would go because this is a new person that only Courtney knows, and she hasn’t had many relatives around her up until now.
What is their relationship like?
There’s a lot of love there, because Granny Campbell was the one who raised Courtney.
But it’s also a really volatile relationship because they’re both big characters, so they jar a lot. Courtney likes to be independent, and she’s been living her life here in Hollyoaks on her own for a while now. So to have Granny turn up out of the blue and try to mother her is not something Courtney takes very well!
Why has Courtney decided not to tell anyone else about her pregnancy?
I think she likes the idea that it’s only her who knows about it – it gives her time to get used to the idea, and get it into her head about what’s going to have to change and how it’s going to affect her life.
What was your initial reaction to Courtney being pregnant?
I was really chuffed that Hollyoaks has chosen to do this story, because I don’t think it’s anything we’ve really seen before. It’s kind of a taboo that you don’t really talk about, disabled people having babies. It’s a really personal thing for me as well, and
I think it’s important to get it out there and make it more normal.
What advice would you give to Courtney about her pregnancy?
Just take every day as it comes. She doesn’t know exactly what’s going to happen in the future – but nobody else really does, either…
