FORMER STRICTLY CHAMP JAY MCGUINESS GOES ON THE RUN FOR A GOOD CAUSE…

-

Seven stars have agreed to experience life on the run to raise money for Stand Up To Cancer:

Gogglebox’s Steph and Dom Parker, The Wanted singers Siva Kaneswaran and Jay Mcguiness, Made In Chelsea’s

Jamie Laing and Spencer Matthews, and broadcaster Anneka Rice. But how do you manage to go off the grid when you’re a celebrity? We chatted to Jay to find out…

What made you want to do the show?

It ticked all the boxes for so many reasons. I really like survival and adventure and that sort of thing – and even though I see Siva a lot and we live really close to each other, it’s totally different when you’re spending all day with someone, so I enjoyed that.

Were you a fan of the show before you signed up?

I love it! But you go into it when you’re a fan thinking, ‘I’ve got this on lockdown’, and then when it comes to plugging up all the holes in your life that someone can get through, you realise it’s a really tough job. I was convinced that I’d covered all bases, but the hunters searched my house and there were a few things Siva and I did that completely failed because I’d left notes everywhere!

Your strategy was to get your fans to help you out – how did that go?

Our fans will go above and beyond. We had one fan in particular who gave us these titbits about how, over The Wanted’s career, the fans knew where we were, and how we’d land in a different airport from the ones that would be seen online. We were gobsmacked at the lengths they went to – there would be a network of American fans helping out the British ones. It was insane, but also hilarious!

How were the moments when you did manage to get off the radar – could you relax at all?

Those moments are really great. We were with one woman who had a camper van, and she was just doing a holiday around the UK. At the end, me and Siva were talking about everything that had happened and I said, “Remember when we had a seaside holiday with a woman called Julie?”. She let us stay in her camper van and bought us fish and chips and we’d go and skim rocks – it was like a little break!
