Hollyoaks star Nadine Mulkerrin, as we quiz her on her character Cleo’s shock pregnancy. “I was really excited when I found out about this storyline – I played a character who had a baby in Waterloo Road, and I loved working with a little one on set.
And you never know what will happen when babies are around!”
But while Nadine is thrilled about this latest development in her alter ego’s life, Cleo is not quite so happy at the prospect of becoming a mother. This week, her Auntie Myra and Nana find out that she’s pregnant – and with the secret out, it’s only a matter of time before Joel discovers that he’s set to become a father…
How does Cleo react when she first finds out she’s pregnant?
She’s overwhelmed, she’s scared, and she’s apprehensive. And she doesn’t tell Joel straight away, so that’s playing on her mind as well. It’s not that fairy-tale thing of it being amazing and everyone’s happy – she’s still only a teenager, and Cleo and Joel haven’t been together long.
What’s Joel’s reaction to the news?
Well, it’s a bit unexpected for him, because he overhears a conversation Cleo is having with Nana, and that’s how he finds out. Cleo feels bad that she hasn’t sat him down and told him herself – it comes out of the blue for him. It’s a bit awkward!
Are Nana and Myra supportive when she tells them?
In typical Nana Mcqueen style, she wants Cleo to get married to Joel! And Cleo has to point out that it’s the 21st century, and she might not want to get married. Cleo’s not your typical Mcqueen – she wants to go to uni, and she has a lot of things going for her.
Everything’s hunky-dory for Cleo and Joel, but we know he was involved in covering up Bart’s death. How would Cleo react to that if she found out?
That secret is the one thing that might tear Cleo and Joel apart. Cleo was quite close to Bart, and she doesn’t know he’s dead yet. But if his body was to turn up

If it came to choosing between Joel and her family, who would Cleo side with?
She loves Joel a lot, but this is murder we’re talking about! That could be a step too far for Cleo.
We’re so happy to see that Nana Mcqueen is back on our screens this week! What was it like working with Diane Langton again?
Brilliant! Diane is amazing, and she was there when I first joined the show, so it’s always nice when she comes back on set. Nana is the heart and soul of the Mcqueen family, and with Jen [Metcalfe, aka Mercedes] and Chelsee [Healey, who plays Goldie] both on maternity leave, it does feel like we’re missing some members of the family.
We know you’re good friends with Jen, so who are you hanging out most with on set now she’s off ?
Well, I’ve got the ‘pregnant friend’ box ticked with Rachel [Adedeji, aka Lisa], who is also expecting a baby. She’s one of my best friends on set, and we work together a lot. I’ve kind of just replaced one pregnant friend with the other! I’m surrounded by people talking about babies, so there must be something in the water. I hope it isn’t catching…
