Aaron and David tie the knot!

NEIGHBOURS’ FIRST-EVER GAY WEDDING GOES WITHOUT A HITCH…

- Sarah Ellis

Grab hold of your confetti and fly the rainbow flags – because David and Aaron are getting hitched this week!

The scene is set for a truly beautiful day, as the residents of Ramsay Street come together for Neighbours’ firstever same-sex ceremony. And judging by the beaming faces in our pictures, we’d say it’s one of the happiest weddings Erinsborough has ever seen…

“It’s just a huge ball of positivity,” grins Takaya Honda, who plays David. “I think the writers and production team saw this as a moment unto itself. It’s still Neighbours, there are moments of drama in the lead-up to Aaron and David saying their vows. But it’s such a beautiful episode, I think the audience is going to love it.”

As David and Aaron’s big day dawns, their parents Fay and Paul can’t wait to walk their boys down the aisle. However, while poorly Aaron is determined to overcome his back pain and successfully walk to the altar, disaster strikes when he puts his back out again – and has to resort to using a wheelchair!

Meanwhile, after Susan withdraws from her formal duties at the ceremony, the grooms are forced to find a new celebrant. Step forward Jemima Davies-smythe, who is played by Aussie comic – and LGBT+ rights campaigner – Magda Szubanski.

“Magda actually approached us to be in the show – it was quite an honour,” reveals Matt Wilson, who plays the other

groom Aaron. “This storyline means so much to her, so in the weeks leading up to it she did massage the scripts with the writing department in order to make sure everything was absolutely perfect. She was really invested in it.”

Jemima’s celebrant style turns out to be rather on the eccentric side – but David and Aaron don’t let it ruin their big day. And following a bit of an unusual ceremony, they eventually exchange their vows and are pronounced husband and husband.

“I’m super excited to see how the fans react to this episode,” Takaya tells us. “Me and Matty have put a lot of work into making this relationship truthful, to get to a point where the audience loves it – which I think they do. Hopefully we will meet all of their expectations!”
