Sally finds out her fate in court

IT ALL GOES WRONG AS SHE HEADS TO COURT…

- Sarah Ellis

The former mayor of Weatherfield could end up jailed this week, as she appears in court charged with fraud! Poor Sal is preparing for her pre-trial hearing, knowing full well that she’s an innocent woman. But she’ll have her work cut out for her trying to prove that, especially after she sacks her lawyer Paula – having caught her in a steamy embrace with Sophie!

“Sally’s innocent, and she’s convinced she doesn’t need Paula!” declares Sally Dynevor, who plays the disgraced lady. “In Sal’s opinion, Paula doesn’t know what she’s doing anyway as she has her mind on something else – Sophie! These are the two people who Sally trusted more than anyone, the two people she thought she could rely on.”

As the week kicks off, Sally thinks she has the upper hand when she finds a list of names that Imran has dropped in the café – and discovers that it’s a list of witnesses for the hearing! But having exposed Imran as a love cheat (see p18) and feeling pretty smug with herself, Sally is in for a rude awakening. After she goes looking for Sophie for some moral support, Sal is stunned to walk in on her and Paula in a compromising position!

“She is really angry on lots of levels,” admits Sally. “She feels Paula hasn’t been truthful to her, and that she hasn’t been pulling her weight in the case! Sally reckons she’s been duped by someone yet again.

“There is this wild scene where they have this huge argument,” she adds. “Sally is livid, and sacks Paula on the spot. That’s when she says she will represent herself.”

Determined to forge ahead with the hearing alone, Sal makes another mistake – by contacting one of the witnesses on Imran’s list!

“She finds out that Judith Fisher, who she worked with, has given a statement,” explains Sally. “Sally doesn’t see anything wrong in just ringing her up and speaking to her as a friend. She

doesn’t know anything about crime or procedures, she just knows she’s innocent. Yet the call ends in a row, and Judith puts the phone down – then tells her lawyers that Sally was harassing her!”

As the day of the hearing arrives, Sally’s fired up, confident that she’ll be home with her family by the end of the day. However, can she keep a cool head in court?

“Of course not!” chuckles Sally. “Things go from bad to worse. Imran is very good at what he does, and he’s far better than someone who’s not a trained solicitor. Sally finds herself in the worst possible predicament, and she messes up completely by getting very personal about Imran.”

As Sally’s fate hangs in the balance, we’re sure she’s regretting letting Paula go! But is her petty behaviour about to cost Sally her freedom?
