“The day goes quicker when you’re laughing!”

Thanks muchly. When do

I get Rear Of The Year, please?” quips the suitably amusing Simon Gregson on discovering he’s scooped our Funniest Male gong for the third time. While Inside

Soap couldn’t possibly comment on Simon’s bottom, we’re happy to report that he’s back in the comedy game again this year, having lost the Funniest Male crown to his equally deserving

Corrie co-star Joe Duttine (Tim) in 2015 and 2016, and Emmerdale’s Dominic Brunt (Paddy) last year…

“I’m very privileged,” grins the star, who’s been cracking Steve’s jokes since 1989. “It’s always good to know how much everyone enjoys silly Steve. The two of us share the same sense of humour – although thanks to the talented Coronation Street writers scripting his jokes, he’s a lot funnier than I am!”

Despite there being little for Steve to laugh about in 2017 – after he and ex-wife Michelle lost their newborn son Ruairi – his recent reunion with other ex-wife Tracy has proved hugely entertaining this year. And although there was nothing very funny about Steve and Michelle’s divorce, Steve’s co-star Kym Marsh – who plays Michelle – remains proud of her former on-screen husband’s special talent...

“He’s got funny bones, that one!” she shared in her OK! magazine column. “I sometimes find it hard working with him because he’s so hysterical, and it’s very difficult to keep a straight face!”

Meanwhile, with Steve and Tracy’s canny teenage daughter Amy having seemingly inherited her parents’ quirky take on life, it looks as if the laughter will continue in the Mcdonald family household for the foreseeable future.

“It’s nice to do something serious and away from ‘slapstick Steve’ – but it’s always really good to get back to the funny stuff,” admits Simon. “Steve is a great character to play, and I love the comedy side of things, so it’s nice that viewers feel the same way.

“The day goes quicker when you’re having a laugh at work,” continues the star. “I’m really chuffed and humbled to have won this award again – so thank you very much!”
