Luckless Arthur Fowler had disgraced himself and his family by stealing the Christmas Club money to pay for a posh wedding for daughter Michelle. Worried wife Pauline begged him to go for a Christmas drink at the Vic, but Arthur refused and stayed at home.

Unable to cope with his demons for a moment longer, Arthur trashed the Fowler living room – and screamed and sobbed as he dropped to the floor. Meanwhile, Pauline saw Michelle take money from Dirty Den Watts in the pub – and clicked that he was baby Vicki’s secret father. Arthur’s depression got worse, and the family was devastated when he was sent to jail after being found guilty of theft. A decade later, Arthur was imprisoned again – but he had been framed. His name was eventually cleared, though just days after being released, he died of a brain haemorrhage.
