Alfie Moon faces his worst nightmare this fortnight, as the news that he is the father of Hayley’s daughter Cherry goes public – and you can just imagine how the bombshell is received by his wife, Kat!
For the most part, Alfie and Hayley have managed to keep their secret safe. Right now, Jean is the only other person who knows the truth, and no one else suspects – even though Hayley decided to name her little girl after Alfie’s mum! However, as Christmas Day approaches, every bit of their deceit will be exposed…
“Typical Alfie, he starts juggling all the lies,” explains Shane Richie, who plays the feckless fella. “He’s trying to keep the whole family happy, and he thinks he’s doing the right thing by Hayley by saying, ‘I will step up and be the father, but we don’t have to tell Kat just yet’. He thinks he has it all under control… though not for long!”
ALFIE’S GRAND PLAN!
In the run-up to the big day, Alfie is keen for his family to enjoy the best Christmas Walford has ever had. So he works hard to make sure No 31 is the perfect venue for the festivities.
There’s a big shock on Christmas Day – a massive cliffhanger!”
“Alfie has renovated the house,” chuckles Shane. “He’s put in a loft, a new fireplace and a coffee machine – which he stole off Ian! Alfie just wants it to be the perfect Christmas, but of course that will never happen!”
The cracks begin to show when
Alfie produces Kat’s wedding ring, hoping that they can put the past behind them. And although Kat rebuffs his advances, Alfie is determined not to give up. Meanwhile, Hayley – who has been feeling increasingly anxious about living under the same roof as the Moons – gives Alfie further cause for concern, as he worries that she might leave with their baby daughter.
“That’s when it it starts snowballing,” Shane tells us. “Alfie is constantly backtracking, and trying to come up with reasons for his behaviour, so the family is going, ‘What does he mean? Why is he doing that? Why has he put a loft in and taking everyone out for dinner?’ They reckon that he’s just being lovely, but it’s all for a reason.
“The problem is Hayley starts to get cold feet,” continues the star. “Alfie thinks she’s about to lose it, so he says, ‘No, we’ll get through Christmas, and then we can find a way through it’. In the end, he does something very unexpected…”
CHRISTMAS DAZE!
Once Christmas dawns, everyone in the Slater house seems in good spirits. Despite Kat still being unsure about whether or not to slip her wedding ring back on her finger, Alfie is confident that by the end of the day, he’ll have won her over. However, by the time that Christmas evening arrives, not even a cracker has been pulled!
“Alfie still thinks, ‘We can do this’,” reckons Shane. “In his head, he goes, ‘I’ll sit down and I’ll have a conversation with Kat, and I’ll let her know that I’m the father of the baby, she’ll be fine about it, and then we can just adopt the child’. He has this whole plan mapped out, and he convinces himself that he can make it work. Playing all that was great!”

While the fella desperately tries to keep the situation under control, Christmas takes a nasty turn when Hayley’s mum
Bev outstays her welcome and Kat throws her out! Unable to deal with the tension, Alfie decides that he better leave too – prompting Hayley to stop him in his tracks. However, before they can work out what they’re going to do next, the truth about their daughter is revealed to the family!
“There is such a big shock on Christmas Day,” promises Shane. “Obviously, I can’t tell you what, but when I read it, I went, ‘You can’t do that! We’ve tipped it over the edge now!’ It’s just a massive cliffhanger. Whether Kat and Alfie can come back from this setback remains to be seen. Even though they’ve faced obstacles in the past, this might prove to be insurmountable.
“Without giving too much away, this is a tough one to come back from, after you see what happens!” adds the actor. “Someone has blood on their hands!”
