Inside Soap first met Maisie Smith eight years ago on a photo shoot in Southend, where she posed for pictures after scooping our
Best Young Actor award.
Coupled with the sense that it only seems like yesterday that six-yearold Tiffany was skipping around Albert Square making mischief for her mum, Bianca, we feel super-old this week as we join Maisie for a good gossip about her character’s wedding day!
In real life Maisie recently turned 18, but her Eastenders alter ego is still two years shy of adulthood – hence why Tiff’s family is livid on hearing that she’s running off to Gretna Green in Scotland to marry boyfriend Keegan!
Will the teenage sweethearts make it to the altar before their loved ones can stop them? Star Maisie takes us behind the scenes of Tiff’s big day…
Hi, Maisie! What did you think when you heard about this story for Tiffany and Keegan?
I was a bit surprised as it’s happened very quickly – one minute Tiffany is hanging out with Bernie, and the next she’s falling in love with her best friend’s brother. It’s been fun to film, as the chemistry that I have on screen with Zack Morris [Keegan] feels really good, and we work well together. We’re great friends in real life, so it’s handy that I’ve been partnered with him!
Are the viewers rooting for them?
Aw, there are so many fan accounts with the hashtag #Tiffgan, making edits of all the little moments between the characters, and it’s lovely to watch them. The viewers seem to love it.
Why does Tiffany suggest that she and Keegan elope to Scotland?
Keegan gets into a little bit of trouble, and I think they realise they want to get married as soon as possible. The only way they can do that is if they go to Gretna Green, as Tiffany is only 16.
Indeed! Do you think that she is making the right decision?
That’s a tough one. As long as she and Keegan are following their hearts and doing what makes them happy, then definitely. Their families find out just as they are on their way to Gretna, though, and chase them there!
How are Tiff and Keegan feeling on the day of the wedding?
They’re very anxious because they need to get married as quickly as possible, and there’s only a certain time slot available. With the added pressure of the journey, which goes a bit wrong, it’s very stressful. But at the same time, Tiff and Keegan know they are madly in love – so they want the wedding to happen.
What did you love most about filming these episodes?
It was so much fun. Tiff ’s dress is beautiful, but I’m not sure I’d want to wear it for my own wedding! It’s very Tiffany, though! For a lot of the scenes we were in a car – Keanu is driving Keegan, Tiff and Bernie – and as a group, our [real-life] chemistry is so good that the scenes felt great.
With the likes of Karen, Sonia and Jack racing to stop the wedding, viewers will have to tune in to find out if Keegan and Tiff end the day as husband and wife.
Meanwhile, Maisie feels privileged to be at the heart of another big plot after a tough year for Tiff, who was groomed and raped as a result of her association with Evie Steele’s drugs gang.
Few young actors who join the cast of a soap aged six go on to take the role into adulthood, which is a testament to Maisie’s sheer hard work and talent…
