Vanessa’s tragic request

There’s heartbreak for Charity this week, when sick Vanessa asks Rhona to take care of little Johnny in the event of her death.
The shocking decision comes just days after Charity faltered when Vanessa made a poignant plea for her to become Johnny’s protector if the worst happened. Charity’s brief pause has ended up costing her dearly, because vulnerable Vanessa no longer has faith that her fiancée is up to the most important job that she could give her.
So instead, the devastated vet turns to best friend Rhona to be Johnny’s guardian.
“This is the deepest cut that Vanessa could inflict on Charity right now, but Johnny must come first,” explains our Dales insider. “They have been building a happy family life together and Vanessa wants to live to enjoy it. But she has to consider what would happen if things went the other way, and that means placing Johnny in the care of the best person she can find.”
Vanessa had believed that Charity was that person until she failed to say ‘yes’ when asked last week. The fact that she even stopped to think about it is enough to tell Vanessa everything she needs to know. For her, Charity has proven beyond doubt that she’s not 100% committed to Johnny, no matter how she feels about Vanessa. If things had been the other way around, Vanessa wouldn’t have needed to think twice before agreeing to be Moses’ official guardian, so it’s heartbreaking for her that Charity was uncertain.
For her part, Charity feels utterly wretched when Vanessa asks Rhona instead of her. Not only does she feel sad that she’s let Vanessa down again, but she’s embarrassed that Rhona now knows Vanessa doesn’t consider her capable of stepping up to the plate.
