Holby City The end for Cameron?

NIC JACKMAN TELLS US WHY KIDNAPPING ANGE IS THE BEGINNING OF THE END FOR HIS KILLER ALTER EGO…

- Laura-Jayne Tyler

After months of playing God with the lives of both his patients and colleagues, Cameron’s wicked killing spree hurtles towards a sensational climax this week, as he holds Ange captive in the hospital basement.

Meanwhile, her daughter Chloe is fiercely determined to track her down, and expose Cameron’s hideous crimes – but just how far will he go in order to escape justice this time?

With so many burning questions, it was only right that Inside Soap got straight on to star Nic Jackman, who plays evil Cameron, to demand that he tell us everything…

Hi, Nic! What a year it’s been for you on screen. Is Cameron well and truly cornered this week?

The net is closing in! I’ve seen the episode, which felt a bit naughty as it’s the only one I’ve ever watched before transmission, and it’s really tense throughout.

What is Cameron planning on doing with Ange?

I don’t think he knows to begin with. He’s in a situation where he’s holding Ange hostage and drugging her to buy some time, so that he can escape the hospital and be on the next plane out of there.

Meanwhile, Nicki is pregnant with his baby. How does he feel about becoming a father, while totally unravelling?

To begin with, a child is the last thing Cam wants, but then he settles on the idea. Cameron even says to Nicki, “Everything I do from now on is for the baby,” and he believes that. The story builds towards a big moment for the pair of them actually, where the truth finally hits Nicki, and Belinda [Owusu, who plays her] is fantastic.

Is it fair to assume that this is the beginning of the end for Cameron? I think it is. Cameron’s a long way down this path, and I don’t think he can ever be redeemed. With the final scene of this episode in particular, you just think he is rotten to the core!

Of all his evil deeds, what has shocked you the most? When Cam stepped back and let Evan [Crowhurst] die, that was probably one of the most shocking moments for me, as it was such a shift from the character I’d been playing. I read the script, and had to take myself off for a walk to digest it! Also, the episode where Cam forced Jason to perform a medical procedure in a lift, only for Cameron to emerge and take the credit, that shocked me, too. Of all the people he could manipulate, I thought, ‘Not Jason’! And then once Cam started taking people’s lives, it became less shocking because I expected it of him!

Cam’s a long way down this path – he can never be redeemed!

Cameron was very sweet when he first joined the ward. What did the writers see in him that prompted a switch to the dark side, do you think? I do wonder about that – hopefully it’s nothing to do with me! Quite often, writers don’t always know where a character is going, and they’ll see bits on screen and go, “Okay, there’s a spark there,” and it grows from that. So I do wonder what they saw in my eyes that made them go, “Yeah, he kills people”! Who knows? [Laughs]

What has it been like for you adopting Cameron’s twisted mindset?

The thing with acting is that it’s escapism, and you get to play someone so far away from who you are. I was given the freedom to be as dark with it as I wanted to be, and I think we’ve been successful in creating a really horrible character. It’s been a challenge, and I’ve loved it!

You’ve been on this journey with Belinda, and also Amy Lennox (who plays Chloe), whose characters stand to be part of Cameron’s undoing. Was that fun to film?

Yeah, it was great. What I love about this episode is that it’s the women who bring him down, and of course they are the people that Cameron has manipulated for so long. All of those guys – Belinda, Amy, Dawn [Steele, aka Ange] and Jaye Jacobs [Donna] are wicked.

What would be your dream next role to cleanse yourself of evil Cameron? I could definitely play someone nicer! Or if it’s a role where I can ride a horse and swing a sword around, that’d be cool!
