JOHN BARROWMAN PLAYS HOST AS SIX NEW CELEBS AIM TO BRING THE HOUSE DOWN…

- Tom Spilsbury

It’s back… for one night only! Following All Star Musicals’ 2019 debut – which saw Corrie’s Daniel Brocklebank (Billy) emerge victorious – this week sees the musical extravaganza make its long-awaited comeback…

“We’re all so excited,” exclaims the show’s returning host, John Barrowman. “Our cast is great, our panel is great… so we’re going to have a great show!”

This time, six new celebs are taking to the stage – TV personality Barney Walsh, actress Jessica Hynes, judge Robert Rinder, ex-EastEnder Luisa Bradshaw-White, Dr Ranj Singh, and political commentator Robert Peston – and all of them will be hoping to break a leg (not literally, we hope). Meanwhile, West End legend Elaine Paige is once again head judge, alongside Trevor Dion Nicholas and newcomer Samantha Barks. And Elaine is also acting as mentor to the celebrity contestants…

“I enjoy both roles,” she tells us. “It’s great to see their progression, from when I first meet them, to their performance on the night. Most of them hadn’t really thought about their character – they seemed to be more concerned about their singing ability – so I tried to build up their confidence. I just hope my suggestions are helpful!”

As you can tell from some of the remarks from the anxious half-dozen below, a few nerves need to be calmed… “Nerves can be a good thing,” admits Elaine. “They get the adrenalin flowing, but nerves must be controlled, or they ruin your performance. My advice is, take a moment, focus your thoughts, and pray!”

“They shouldn’t be nervous performing in front of me, as I’m not there as a judge,” adds John. “But it’s good to have nerves on the inside, and then use those nerves.”

It’s not just the contestants who will be on stage – there’s also a special opening number from the panellists and John…

“We’re performing You Can’t Stop The Beat from Hairspray!” reveals Elaine, proudly. “Lyrically, it’s the perfect song – full of energy, drive and positivity, and it will give a real company feel. You know the old adage: the show must go on!”
