SUSAN CALMAN TELLS US ABOUT SPOTTING CURIOS WORTH A FORTUNE AND ANTIQUES OF THE FUTURE IN A BRAND-NEW SERIES…
BIG ANTIQUE ADVENTURE WITH SUSAN CALMAN
Channel 5 7PM
Hi, Susan! Tell us where you filmed the series…
It was Hemswell Antiques in Lincolnshire. I’ve been to some big antique centres in my time, but this was huge! You could find anything you ever wanted in that place!
And you have help from experts Paul Martin, Danny Sebastian and Natasha Raskin Sharp… They’re wonderful. Natasha gave me some great tips, like, if someone is selling a cabinet, you could put something else in there, so ask them if there’s a discount for buying a few different things. It’s all about being polite, but also not being afraid to ask if there’s a deal to be had.
At the end of the week, you’re at the rostrum for your own charity auction – what was that like? I’ve done stand-up, I’ve done Strictly, but I was so nervous doing that! I will not be doing it again in a hurry!
And the team also looks at the potential value of our childhood items… We do a segment each day on antiques of the future: VHS tapes, mobile phones, video games… I’m a huge gamer myself, so I was seeing that a Nintendo 64
GoldenEye 007, which I had when I was a student and probably spilt beer over, is now worth money!
What antiques do you have at home?
I’ve got a 1930s German grandfather clock in my hall. And I collect film and TV memorabilia, so I’ve got a full-size Dalek, Marlene Dietrich’s cufflinks… I was bidding on those as a surprise for my wife, who was also bidding on them as a surprise for me. So we actually raised the price by bidding against each other!
