My Telly HEAVEN!
As Malpractice wraps up on ITV1 this week, Jordan Kouamé – who stars in the nail-biting drama series as medical investigator Dr George Adjei – reveals the TV shows he’d prescribe for a perfect night in…
What’s been the best thing about working on Malpractice?
The crew. I feel as if Phil [director Philip Barantini] did such a great thing with cultivating this amazing atmosphere on set – particularly since we’re dealing with such dark subject matter.
What have you been enjoying on TV most recently?
Succession – me and the rest of the world! It’s the perfect balance of satire and real drama, and genuine belly laughs that you just wouldn’t expect from this kind of series. It truly blows my mind!
How about comedy?
There’s a US show called Community which I like – also the American version of The Office. And Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace, which was co-created by Richard Ayoade, is wicked. It’s a spoof take on horror TV shows from the 80s.
Which shows did you enjoy growing up?
Fresh Prince Of Bel Air, and a show called My Wife And Kids, which were both on a TV channel called Trouble in the noughties. Also, the detective show Columbo, which my mum used to have on all the time, so it kind of got ingrained into my psyche.
Are there shows that you like to chill out with?
Again, the US version of The Office. That show is like a warm bath for me. I’ve seen the entire run about five times, I reckon. I find that really therapeutic.
What did you last binge-watch?
Beef, on Netflix. It’s super-dark, about two people taking out their frustrations on each other. For me it tackles mental health in a creative and different way. One minute you’re laughing, the next you’re terrified. But it’s beautiful to watch.
Is there a TV personality who’s inspired you?
I listened to a podcast with Davina McCall a couple of weeks ago, where she was talking about the things she’s overcome. I used to watch her a lot with my mum, as she was obsessed with Big Brother. I remember Davina beaming sunshine and rainbows, so to now know what she’s gone through, and that’s the type of person she turned out to be, is incredible.
