JB Gill, Helen Skelton and Jules Hudson are down on the farm celebrating the arrival of spring…

- Allison Jones

Spring has sprung, and farmers are set for their busiest time of year. This new series offers a joyous peek into rural life at this special time of year, with Helen Skelton and Jules Hudson rolling up their sleeves in the lambing shed with farmers Rob and Dave Nicholson, while JB Gill experiences the tranquillity of our coasts and countryside further afield. He shares some of that spring bliss with Inside TV here…

Hello, JB! Tell us what’s in store as you all spring into action…

We have beautiful baby animals, including a young Shire horse, lambs, goats and alpacas. For me, any series that highlights the role of farming and access to the outdoors is really important, so this show really has something for all the viewers.

What do you most look forward to in spring? There’s new life on the farm and it’s one of those times of the year where there’s always something going on. The weather has brightened up lately, but we’ve done Springtime On The Farm in previous years in the snow.

I love the unpredictability and the variety of it all…

Are you used to filming in all weathers by now? I can definitely embrace it! We’re very lucky in this country to have four very distinct seasons, and you get to appreciate their different aspects and nuances – particularly on a farm.

While Helen and Jules are with farmers Rob and Dave, what are you getting up to? I’m heading down the wellness route, exploring how the outdoors impacts mental health. I’ve been to Margate speaking to cold-water swimmers, up early with the dawn chorus – appreciating the nature we’re surrounded by and have access to every day.

As a farmer yourself

a member of JLS, do you feel more at home in a soggy field or on an arena stage? The last tour I did was at the end of last year, and I had to remind myself, ‘This is what I used to do all the time!’ But whether it’s chucking my wellies on or picking up the mic, you slip into it quickly. I’m able to include my kids in all aspects of my work, which is very special – I don’t take that for granted at all.
