Aisle be there: Matty and Kyle wait for Amy’s arrival Ash on…

“There’s this new family dynamic now Matty has Kyle as his stepson,” reveals Ash. “But he’s also his step-brother, if you can work that one out on the family tree! They’ve even had the seal of approval from Cain! Matty’s going to be a good guidance for Kyle, so they have everything ahead of them.”

It’s complicated: Is Matty Kyle’s step-dad or his step-brother? Both! I had any insight to add about how my character might be feeling in that moment. We had some really nice chats, and I was able to offer a level of authenticity that really comes out in the vows. It was actually the longest speech I’ve ever had to learn for and I wanted to make sure I smashed it – I rehearsed the vows to my girlfriend the night before a couple of times, and she was getting into it. What do you think married life will look like for Matty and Amy?

Ash Well, they’ve waited a long time to get married. But first thing’s first, they’re going on a beautiful honeymoon. They’ve worked extra hard at the Hide to save up and they’re going to Santorini. They have loads of plans going forward, but like all couples, they’ll have their challenges.

Natalie I think married life for Amy and Matty is going to be fun. Things are on the up for them with the honeymoon, but then they have to come back to the village and figure things out with Kerry. They do start to get tested as a couple.

Would you like to explore Amy and Matty having kids of their own in the future?

Ash Definitely, we’ve always wanted that. Obviously they have Kyle, but for them to have a baby of their own would just be huge for the characters. They both want children, and I think it would be another cultural turning point to see a trans parent. I’d love to play that story. But also they’re living with Victoria, and Kerry’s around too, so it’s about how these people interact with a married couple. Your priorities change when you get married and have kids – Kyle is Amy’s everything, but to see her and Matty have a child together would be lovely.

What else is coming up? Ash There’s a big story ahead that I’m really excited to play – I’m absolutely buzzing for it. There’s going to be a huge stumbling block for the couple and a real test. If they haven’t been tested already, they’re definitely about to be! I think that’s probably all I can say, but I’m ready to put my all into a big storyline, and really go for it.

“Amy and Matty are similar in that they have roots in the village, but they’ve left and come back, and been on huge journeys in that time,” Natalie reminds us. “They’ve been out and seen the world and it’s changed them both a lot – and then they’ve come back and reunited with their families, and now they love it in Emmerdale. I mean, they even work in the same place… they’re joint assistant managers, aren’t they? They have a lot in common, and they’re just a really cute couple.”

Married life for Amy and Matty is going to be fun
